Alfonso B. Perez School is a public school located in Michigan Avenue, Los Angeles, California. It is part of Local District 5 of the Los Angeles Unified School District and serves children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade levels. The school follows a traditional single track school calendar and serves approximately 482 students which are predominantly Hispanic or Latino.

Perez School offers comprehensive programs for children whose ages range from 3 to 22 and whose needs are most appropriately met in a special school environment. The students participate in a variety of program designs including: Special Day classes; Secondary Departmentalized Programs; as well as Community Based Instruction. Designated Instructional Services such as Speech Therapy, Adaptive Physical Education, Visually Impaired Services; Physical Therapy Services; Occupational Therapy Services, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, etc. are also provided as recommended in the Individualized Education Program.

History

1925 - After the Franciscan style buildings were completed, the site was named Eugene Street School. Classes for educable mentally retarded pupils from 8-14 years of age were conducted.

1956 - The school was closed and left vacant except for a brief period when it was used as an annex of nearby Stevenson Junior High School. It was reopened as a regular elementary school and renamed McDonnell Avenue School with a modified office staff under the administration of the principal of Brooklyn Avenue School.

1966 - In July, the school was transferred to the Special Education Branch. Bungalows were added and the school was remodeled to accommodate the needs of 9-18 year old mentally retarded pupils.

1970 - In February, 14-18 year old TMR students were transferred to Ninth St. (now Lanterman) School and McDonnell Avenue School first admitted 6 and 7 year old TMR students.

1971 - In September, the new building designed for physically handicapped pupils of East and North Los Angeles was completed. Classes for the physically handicapped were transferred from Pacific Blvd. and Salvin Schools. Classes for developmentally handicapped, autistic and multi-handicapped students were also added.

1980 - The first non-categorical class was started. The new facility also included housing for physical and occupational therapy units staffed by the Department of Los Angeles County Crippled Children's Services.

1981 - In September, the Los Angeles Board of Education honored the outstanding District educator, Alfonso B. Perez by renaming the school "Alfonso B. Perez Special Education Center."

1982 - In February, a $5.2 million secondary building was opened. One hundred students were transferred from Lanterman School to Perez.

1998 - The school was again renamed to "Alfonso B. Perez School".
